The big storm moving through Orange County has swift water rescue teams on alert and is causing problems in the freeways – even with light holiday traffic.
Rain could total up to 2 inches on the coastal plain, and almost twice that much in the uppermost eastern foothills, by the time the system fully moves east Tuesday, the National Weather Service says.

Amgen Tour of California 2009 is coming in 3 days...

First held in 2006, the Amgen Tour of California is the Golden State's answer to the Tour de France. The 800-mile race follows a route through the California redwoods, across wine country and down the Pacific Coast. The event raises funds for cancer care and treatment.

Ace sprinter Nolan Hoffman secured a second major win in successive weekends for Team Neotel when he won The Herald VW Cycle Tour in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

Hoffman, the 2006 winner, outpaced the strongest field ever assembled at the popular 105km race, which is the first of 13 events in the prestigious new Alpha Pharm Seeding Series. The 23-year-old clocked a winning time of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 21 seconds, edging out MTN

In the women’s race, hometown favourite, Anriette Schoeman lost the race for the first time in 13 years. Surprisingly though, she wasn’t beaten by any of her archrivals, but by Jenny Stenerhag, a former professional racer from Sweden, now based in Cape Town and riding as individual in the colours of MTN Club 100.“My team was superb today,” beamed Hoffman afterwards. “They kept me sheltered and then gave me the perfect leadout. Johann Rabie took us to 500m out then Herman (Fouche) took me to 300 metres where I started my sprint. It was textbook finish for us and great to get a big win so early in the year.”Neotel’s new signing, Fouche, won last weekend’s Pick n Pay The Star Fast One in Johannesburg, proving that Neotel will be difficult to beat this year with two quick finishers.“It’s good to get the Alpha Pharm Seeding Series leader’s jersey so early on and it’s one of our objectives to try and win the overall series,” explained Hoffman. “With myself and Herman finishing first and third today, we’re in a strong position from the start.”In the women’s event, it was the biggest South African race win for the 33-year-old Stenerhag, who went one better than last year when she was pipped by Schoeman for the title.“I didn’t think I had much of a chance today as the three big teams, MTN, Nasuha Telecoms and Cycle Lab Toyota controlled most of the race. But with about 10km left we caught three riders in a breakaway and that pretty much set up the race for a sprint,” said Stenerhag.In the fast dash to the line, MTN’s Chrissie Viljoen took on Schoeman in what appeared to be a two-rider duel to the line. But Stenerhag suddenly appeared on the right and grabbed the win by less than a wheel length.“As we hit the final kilometre I was boxed in and thought that my chances of a podium place were gone. But then a small gap opened up on the right. I took it and it paid off. I have won other races in South Africa, but of course it feels great to win such a big race against such strong competition.”More than 2000 participants started the event, which also offered a shorter 75km race. With clear skies and a light southeasterly wind, conditions were near perfect.“It’s been a fantastic start for the Alpha Pharm Seeding Series. We are so happy with the positive response to the Series both from the professional teams and from the cycling community in general,” said Susan Franken, Alpha Pharm Loyalty Manager.“The professional teams have all indicated that the addition of the Alpha Pharm Seeding Series adds new motivation and a new goal. It’s fitting that Neotel won today because on Saturday the whole team came to the kiddies race showing their support for the youngsters who will be the future champions,” added Franken.

EVENTS AND ATTRACTIONS:Racers make the annual pilgrimage to Sea Otter to participate in cycling’s best competitive and non-competitive events. The Mountain Bike events include an epic Cross Country, Dual Slalom, Super D, Downhill, and more. Road cyclists enjoy Road Racing and Circuit Racing on the world famous Laguna Seca Raceway. For those who want to take a less competitive route, Sea Otter offers recreational Road Tours and Mountain Bike Tours.
The Sea Otter Village, hub of the event, pulses with the activity of free bike demos, stunt shows, kids’ playhouses, an international food court, beer and BBQ garden, and live entertainment. Free to kids 12 and under are Sea Otter Egg Hunts, Bike Rodeos, Kid’s Races, and much more. The Sea Otter Expo holds hundreds of vendors who display new products, give out free samples, and offer terrific bargains. Hundreds of professional road and mountain bike athletes come to Sea Otter to race, sign autographs, and share their racing techniques with the fans.

Cyclist helps police chase down burglary suspect

SANTA ANA A man pursued a burglary suspect on his bicycle today after watching the man crawl out the window of a building, police said.
Around 11:30 a.m. police began getting cell-phone calls from the witness. The witness said he was on his bike and chasing after a man he saw leaving a building at 3301 S. Bear St. The suspect was on foot, Santa Ana police Cmdr. James Schnabl said.
With the bicyclist's help, officers eventually caught up to the suspect who was hiding inside a drainage pipe.
Police set up a parameter around the other side of the pipe as a helicopter kept watch overhead. The suspect eventually surrendered, Schnabl said.

Purpose:

50 mile ride - Route
Starting at Cook's Corner, this full route will climb into the back side of O'Neill, proceed through and out of the park near the RSM lake, and make its way to the Dove Canyon waterfall. Then we'll ride the ridge trails all the way to Caspers Wilderness Park, dropping down Star Rise and catching trails including Bell Canyon, Oso, Cougar, and back to Bell Canyon. At the end of Bell Canyon we arrive at a parking lot and rest rooms that will be our outermost checkpoint and refueling/aid station. From there we proceed up East Ridge all the way to Cougar/Oso, back on Bell Canyon and up Star Rise, tracing our route all the way back to the Dove Canyon waterfall (an aid station will be there as well). After refueling, we ride past the Coto main gate, climb and traverse Chiquita Ridge, head down Tijeras Creek trail to the Arroyo Trabuco Trail. 25 mile ride - Route
This ride shares the same beginning and ending route as the 50 miler - but it skips the entire middle Caspers section. It starts at Cook's, climbs through O'Neill and on to the Dove Canyon waterfall. However, instead of riding out to Caspers, this group will head directly over to the Chiquita Ridge trail, down Tijeras Creek to the Arroyo Trabuco Trail, back through O'Neill and finish up at Cook's for some post-ride fun.

5 mile fun ride
New this year! This fun ride is open to riders of all ages. It's an easy route, travelling along the paved Aliso Creek Bike Trail from Cooks Corner down to Saddleback Church and back. Enjoy fun games for riders along the way.
