Race Report from sponsored rider Tasa Herndon

Left to Right - Tasa Herndon, Melissa Buhl(KHS) and Jackie Harmony(All Mountain Cyclery)

Hi Serfas!

I just got back from a great time out in Boulder City where I placed 3rd in the 2nd St. Patty's Day Feast. The weather was perfect, no wind, and I even got to sport my flip flops.

There was also a celebration of life for Bootleg Canyon master mind Brent Thompson. Sunday, after the race, everyone geared up and did a run down the mountain for Brent. It was a really nice event!
I was happy with my 3rd place. It was the same course as last month, but with a small extension at the end and I bested my time. It's always nice to stand on the podium with the World Cup Champion, Melissa Buhl.

Matt Lauer: D'oh! A deer

By Hanh Nguyen
March 23, 07:46 AM
Matt Lauer has been sidelined after a close encounter with a deer.
The "Today" host was MIA Monday morning (March 23) because he was laid up with an injured shoulder after riding his bicycle on Long Island over the weekend and "had a run-in with a deer," informs co-host Meredith Vieira.
Word is that Lauer was startled when a deer suddenly jumped in front of him, causing him to brake suddenly and fly off of his bike, landing on his shoulder. "Matt's banged up with a displaced shoulder, it popped out," adds Vieira. Lester Holt filled in for Lauer, 51.
Lauer has ridden his bike in the Netherlands for his annual "Where in the World is Matt Lauer?" segment and even ad the Olympic velodrome in Beijing.

In an email Lauer joked that he suspected "the deer hired by the competition" to take him down, but Vieira added that "I’d hire the deer -- but just to graze him."
It's unclear exactly when Lauer will return to his hosting duties.
There's no word about the deer's reaction after its close brush with fame.

OC Wheelmen Meeting and Product Presentation

The Orange County Wheelmen (OCW) is the most diverse and oldest bicycle club in Orange County with over 400 members. Cycling subgroups within OCW include Paramount Racing, Goat Hill (off-road cycling), and Tandem Time. The club hosts several annual events, many special activities, and numerous weekly rides.OCW was founded in 1970. Beginning as a recreational cycling club, its focus has expanded to staging cycling events that attract hundreds of riders, to maintaining an active presence in the community through charitable donations, and to promoting safety and political advocacy through the club's training rides and support of the Orange County Bicycle Coalition (OCBC) and the California Association of Bicycling Organizations (CABO).
OWC invited Serfas to be a guest speaker at their monthly meeting. James Thomas took center stage for Serfas, presented the Serfas products, and offered up raffle prizes for those in attendence. The presentation was a big success and most in the meeting were "unaware that Serfas made so many bicycle products".

Warriors Society's Vision Quest MTB Race

Kyle Holderman passing another rider

While most of us were snug in bed Saturday morning, Kyle Holderman (Serfas Sponsored Athlete #92 pictured above), his buddy Paul, and nearly 200 other cyclists were hammering up and down Saddleback Mountain in what is widely considered one of the 10 toughest mountain biking races in the country.

Think 55.5 miles and more than 11,000 feet of gain on a mixed course of loose rocks, twisting narrow single-track trails and fast fire roads – starting at 5:30 a.m.

The Warrior's Society, a volunteer trail maintenance organization which put on Saturday's race, saw Manuel Prado as the winner.

Vision Quest, as it's called, is the kind of race you train months for just to make the midrace cutoff of 6.5 hours, which still leaves you with a monster climb up West Horse Thief Trail, another chunk of Main Divide and the entire Trabuco Creek trail and road.
Prado's winning finish time? Five hours, fourteen minutes – half the time of some finishers.
